Rio is available for a pet home or working dog home. He will do best in a home where his parents have a good understanding of Heeler behaviors and dedication to training.

Hi! I’m Rio! I’m a blue heeler mix and a very special boy. I was a stray found in Texas but moved up here so I would have a better chance at adoption. When they found me in Texas I was infested with flies that were eating away at my skin. But I’m all better now! A trainer picked me out of all the dogs at the shelter to be a service dog! I must be a REALLY good boy! Unfortunately, the person I went to decided they were not ready for a service dog at this time. So after only 2 weeks I find myself without a forever home again! The shelter papers say I am 2 but my trainer quickly realized I am a barely a year old.  I know sits, downs, and I walk pretty well on a loose leash if you don’t tug on me. I’m a quick learner and just want to make you happy. I am good with other dogs but would really like them to play with me so I swat at them and poke them with my nose to get them to play. Sometimes I find it fun to nibble on their fur. If they continue to ignore me I will just find something else to do and go lay down. I did live with a cat for 2 weeks but didn’t really see him much. I am really friendly and love everyone, especially kids. However, being so young I do still like to jump a lot and mouth your hands to show my love for you. I jump the most when I am excited so a family with very young kids probably isn’t the best for me because I might jump on them and accidentally hurt or scare them. Being a stray I need to be taught house manners (those couches are sooooo comfy)  but I’m potty trained as long as you take me out regularly. I’m still learning what are my toys and what are the kids toys but a simple “no” is all it takes for me to learn! I love to run and play so a backyard with a fence would be best. If you don’t have a fence you can exercise me in other ways. I love to go for walks, hikes, and I LOVE to swim!! I’m the perfect camping buddy or running buddy. And did I mention that my absolute favorite thing is just to be with the people I love. I love to cuddle and kiss. It’s been so long since I have had affection that sometimes I get overly excited when being cuddled and have to be reminded to settle. Otherwise, though I’m usually a pretty even keeled guy for being so young. I adapt well to different situations and there isn’t much that I’m afraid of. I’m pretty quiet too unless you plan on leaving without me. I want to go with you soooo bad that I will cry for you when I see you go. But don’t worry I will settle down shortly after you go. I ride in a car really well. I rode 2.5 hours in the car and didn’t make a peep! I also am calm and relaxed in a kennel and will walk right in if you ask me to. I’m even happy to sleep in a kennel during the night and will not cry or whine. I’m up to date on all my vaccinations and am heart worm negative. I am also neutered.  I am up to date on my heart worm preventative and flea and tick preventative. I just want a family that will do fun things with me and love me. Please understand that I’m still a puppy and have a lot to learn, but that I really want to do things right and want to find a family that can be mine! I’m the happiest, sweetest, boy you’ll ever meet! I have so much potential and with a little bit of training, patience, and a lot of love will be one of the best dogs you could ask for!
